What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind) When Moving to Portugal

After helping thousands of families move to Portugal, we've learned what's worth shipping and what's better left behind. Here's our honest advice.
Definitely Bring
- Sentimental items: Family heirlooms, photo albums, artwork
- Quality furniture: Pieces you love and are in good condition
- Electronics: Portugal uses the same plugs as the UK!
- Books: English books are expensive in Portugal
- Kitchen equipment: Quality pans, appliances you rely on
- Bedding: Good quality mattresses and linens
Consider Leaving Behind
- ✕Heavy winter clothes: You'll rarely need thick coats
- ✕Old furniture: If it's worn, cheaper to replace
- ✕Thick carpets: Tile floors are standard in Portugal
- ✕Heavy curtains: Shutters are common; light curtains preferred
- ✕Garden furniture: Often cheaper to buy locally
The Cost-Benefit Test
For each item, ask yourself:
- 1. How much would it cost to replace in Portugal?
- 2. How much space does it take up (shipping cost)?
- 3. What's the sentimental value?
If replacement cost < shipping cost and no sentimental value = leave it behind
What About Cars?
We transport cars to Portugal regularly. It often makes sense to bring your UK car, especially if it's relatively new. You'll need to re-register it in Portugal within 6 months of establishing residency.
Our Top Tip
Start decluttering early. The less you move, the less it costs. Be ruthless! If you haven't used something in a year, you probably won't miss it in Portugal.
